If you are looking for a great Halloween special to watch, Magical Elves has partnered with Peacock and Buzzfeed’s Tasty. Casey Kriley and Jo Sharon are the Co-CEO’s of Magical Elves and Executive Producers for Snoop and Martha’s Very Tasty Halloween special will air on Peacock, October 21st. Jo and Casey took time to talk with Horrornews.net for an exclusive interview about working with the legends Snoop Dogg and Martha Stewart, and Tasty food content creator Alvin Zhou.
“SNOOP AND MARTHA’S VERY TASTY HALLOWEEN is produced by BuzzFeed Studios, Magical Elves and Snoopadelic Films. Casey Kriley, Jo Sharon, Hillary Olsen, Patrick J. Doody and Gaylen Gawlowski serve as executive producers for Magical Elves. Rich Reid and Charlotte Simms serve as executive producers for Buzzfeed. Snoop Dogg and Martha Stewart serve as executive producers.”
Hi Casey and Jo. It’s so great talking to both of you. I’m excited for Snoop and Martha’s Very Tasty Halloween special (It airs on the Peacock network on October 21st). I love Snoop! I think Snoop and Martha together are great.
Jo- They’re great and true friends which is really fun to see.
How do the two of you decide what happens for the Halloween episode?
Jo- We’re partnered with Buzzfeed’s Tasty on the project. It’s so exciting because Casey and I are great fans of that brand. We wanted to make sure the food is the central focus. We wanted to make sure that everything is unique and the first of its kind. We looked at every other baking competition and Halloween baking competition show that’s been done. We realized that there hasn’t been anything that was done like this and part of that is because it’s the construct of a TV show. You only have a certain amount of time to create things. We knew that we wanted to do something that was bigger and that hadn’t been done before. We wanted to create these edible immersive experiences that people can walk through and eat, kind of Willie Wonka style. What better framework to have that experience in, rather than a party? The framework of the show is Snoop and Martha are throwing this amazing party and inside that party there will be these edible experiences that the party goers can eat and taste. So, that was how we came up with the idea.
Congratulations on the 20th anniversary of Magical Elves. What advice or words of wisdom would the two of you offer?
Casey- I would say it’s been an honor and a privilege for me to work at Magical Elves when the company was founded twenty years ago. Be tenacious and find something that your passionate about.
Jo- It’s the people, Magical Elves is a collection of amazing people who are like-minded and passionate about the work they do. We want to make great programming and we all share that together. I feel fortunate to be a CO-CEO with Casey whom I love to work with and love as a person. It’s fun to get to experience that with somebody else and have somebody on the ride with you.
Casey- Awe, I love you too, Jo.
What are the two of you most excited about for this episode?
Jo- Being able to work with Snoop and Martha and it’s been one of the highlights of our career. It was everything you could possibly imagine; they are legends in their own right. It was so rewarding to see this whole spectacle come together. It was great to see their relationship and it was fun to see them inside the construct of a baking competition which we’ve never seen before.
Casey- When you have talent like Snoop and Martha, and you add in Alvin Zhou from Tasty, it was exciting to see.
Jo- Yes, the chemistry was off the charts.
What was it for the two of you working with Snoop and Martha? Did you take anything away from this amazing experience?
Jo- I would say they are stellar professionals. They were amazing and professional as was Alvin.
Do the two of you have any special Halloween traditions that you can share?
Casey- I would say I didn’t have any Halloween traditions, but now that I have a seven-year-old son, every year starting at the beginning of October, more and more Halloween decorations have been added to our yard. We have officially become one of those houses that looks like somebody threw up Halloween in their front yard.
Jo- I can concur, that’s definitely what’s happening at her house. I follow the candy.
That sounds good to me. Halloween is my favorite holiday. Thank you, Casey and Jo, so much for taking the time to talk with Horrornews.net. It’s been an honor to talk with both of you. I’m so excited for this special.
Casey- Thank you.
Jo- Thank you.
You can watch Snoop and Martha’s Very Tasty Halloween Special on Peacock on October 21, 2021.
Filmmakers are always looking for the next trick to make their movies even more enjoyable for audiences. 3D is fine but the glasses are uncomfortable, and many people get motion sickness or headaches from watching 3D movies so it’s certainly not for everyone.
Smell-o-vision was more of a crazy dream than an achievable reality – and to be honest most horror films would smell awful. In 1959, the theatrical release of The Tingler included some theater seats wired to vibrate which could be cued at a key moment. It was a fantastic gimmick but with more and more people consuming media at home, it wouldn’t work for today’s audiences.
Augmented Reality could be the answer. If people are already watching most of their media on their phones or on smart TVs, the technology required on the viewer’s end is already largely in place. AR is essentially virtual reality-lite: instead of fully entering a virtual world, virtual elements are placed in the real world (through the magic of a smartphone camera and screen).
How much more effective would a jump scare be if the figure popping out of the shadows was popping out of the shadows in your own living room?!
Other industries are already taking advantage of augmented reality to make experiences more immersive. Video games have been at the forefront in implementing augmented reality technology.
No one can forget how the whole world seemed to lose its mind when Pokémon Go! was released. Zombies, Run! also managed to bring gaming and exercising together, with the AR elements actually making it enjoyable to work out.
Alongside video games, online casinos have been leading the way in using augmented reality. Many online casinos feature live casino dealers, an element that would not be possible without the advances in AR technology.
You could always watch a stream of a dealer dealing the cards but until now it would have been impossible to interact in real time with the dealer and the other players “at the table”. It has brought online casinos even closer to brick-and-mortar casinos in what they are able to offer.
Imagining AR in classic Giallo horror
Let’s take a moment to imagine the possibilities augmented reality could open in horror movies by looking at how it could have been used to ramp up the tension and the fear in some classic Giallo films.
These Italian horror masterpieces often featured heavy and intense use of color, fantastical twists, and oh so much technicolor blood. The likes of Dario Argento, Mario Bava and their peers would have made great use of this technology if it had been available to them.
Phenomena (1985), Argento’s classic about a girl who uses her powers to communicate with insects to solve a string of grisly murders would be ideal for some added AR scares. How much more horrific would the bloody vat of maggots’ scene be if the viewer could look down and see maggots crawling up their arms too?
The dream sequence in Bava’s The Red Queen Kills Seven Times (1972) where the masked murderess is running down the hallway towards the viewer would be even more nightmarish for the viewer if she seemed to keep running right out of the frame. In many Giallos, light and color are used to tint an entire scene, giving it an unearthly glow. AR technology could mimic that in the viewer’s own home as they’re watching, with the colors changing to match the on-screen hues.
If including augmented reality elements within a film itself feels too gimmicky, there is also the possibility for AR content released as part of a companion app. A horror film photo app is one potential idea. It could have filters that put you in Freddie’s nightmare gloves or in the murderous red dress from In Fabric (2018).
A mobile game with AR elements that tied into the film also has a lot of potential. Walking to catch a cutesy character might have gotten a lot of people to start moving more but having to escape the Candyman would certainly get me off the couch and running!
Augmented reality is still new and is improving all the time as people in the creative industries realize the value it could have for their projects. Horror films might not need any fancy new technology or special effects to make them terrifying, but it could be fun to see what directors are capable of with this new toy.

Circle of Bones, a Filipino independent horror/action film written and directed by award-winning Filipino filmmaker Vincent Soberano is showing in US theaters starting October 22, 2021.
Released by Vertical Entertainment and repped by Safier Entertainment, the movie is in Tagalog and English language and was filmed in Panglao, Bohol and Cainta, Rizal. It is produced by IndieGo Pictures Entertainment in cooperation with CMB Films and Blackburst Studios and Executive Producers are Jared Safier and Thomas Walton.
International action star Sarah Chang joins the cast of Filipino stars including Jana Victoria, Marela Torre, Ian Ignacio and Epy Quizon, with a cameo of the Philippines’ iconic Joel Torre. The film is based on Vincent Soberano’s unpublished book, “Yawa” – tales of local superstitions and modern-day urban legends of the Visayas region. Set in the picturesque island of Panglao, Bohol, the story is told by a lone survivor of a mysterious cult suspected of mass murders and human sacrifices.
Synopsis: When Filipino police investigate the lone survivor from a series of bizarre and macabre cult murder-sacrifices that has left a trail of bloody, dismembered bodies and bones, they find a former American FBI agent living in seclusion – disfigured, traumatized and mentally unstable. Her accounts of supernatural events, demonic possessions, ancient prophecies and child sacrifices only sound too incredulous, where lines are blurred, bordering between truth, deception or delusion.
Soberano recounts how the story was developed while he was on location hunting for adifferent film. “I get my inspiration for stories usually in the most unexpected ways,” he recalls. “I was location-hunting for another movie and I stumbled into a cult temple in Bohol. Curious, I started asking around and based on stories from the locals, I came up with the new plot for Circle of Bones.”
This is the first time a Filipino movie has been released theatrically in the United States, Canada and the UK by Vertical Entertainment, a top-ranked film distribution company based in Santa Monica, California, and founded by producers Richard B. “Rich” Goldberg and Mitch Budin in 2012.
The film will be released in 10 major US cities starting Friday, October 22, 2021.
Following its theatrical release, the film will also be released on VOD, on platforms such as Amazon Prime, iTunes, Google Play, Microsoft Movies & TV, etc.
“This movie is uniquely Filipino and features sights and stories never before seen by the US audience,” says Jared Safier, one of the executive producers and a 4-time Emmy Award winning producer. “I’m confident it will do well in the US market, both theatrically and on streaming platforms.”
“Having a Filipino-made, independent genre film get a theatrical release throughout the US is a big achievement for me,” director Vincent Soberano says. “It gives me great pride as a Filipino filmmaker that I’ve gotten this far representing Filipino genre films in the US mainstream market as well as worldwide.”
Barry is a drug-addled degenerate who, after yet another bender, get abducted by aliens. Barry takes a backseat as his alien visitor assumes control of his body and takes it for a joyride through Cape Town. What follows is an onslaught of drugs, sex and violence as Barry’s alien tourist enters the weird and wonderful world of humankind.
Ryan Kruger directed and wrote Fried Barry. James C. Williamson is also listed a writer.
Life can’t get any weirder… but what do you consider weird? The film opens with the viewer rating warning. Such a cool shot from space to earth.
We meet Barry (Gary Green). Dude is in all sorts of chaos, he goes home to his wife, Suz (Chanelle de Jager) and they’re kid. Suz is sick of the bullshit. In life no matter what kind of crap and chaos you get into, remember kids know a lot more than people give them credit for. Barry leaves and heads to the bar. This isn’t going to go well.
Barry meets up with a friend at the bar. The friend has a lot to say. The poor bartender is going to need a bartender of his own to talk with.
Barry and his friend leave the bar to go shoot up. Barry is abducted while standing on the sidewalk. You can see how different Gary Green is acting as Barry now that he’s been abducted.
Imagine you’re standing on the sidewalk and you just get lifted off the ground and abducted by whatever else is out there in the universe.
I was able to interview the director-writer, Ryan Kruger and he did use practical effects for Fried Barry. The effects, the shots, the colors. Ryan Kruger delivers with Fried Barry.
Keep an eye out for Ryan Kruger’s appearance as Danny. Abducted Barry goes out and gets himself into all kinds of things, and has a baby in the process. It’s so wild when you when you think about the universe and what could be out there.
If you haven’t seen Destination Marfa by Andy Stapp, make sure you check that out. It’s a different perspective but for some reason I thought about that film while watching this one.
In the midst of Barry’s chaos, he saves a man. His wife comes looking for him, and she’s upset and worried. Suz really is the heart and soul of this movie. She is trying so hard and being a woman is hard enough.
Barry actually does some of the stuff that Suz has asked him to do. Gary Green is so different in his abducted state. He walks with this bewildered look on his face with nonstop curiosity as to what people are doing.
He looks at people as if he’s trying to figure them out, he’s trying to figure out what they are. I think if Hunter S. Thompson said, let’s figure out extraterrestrials and life, he would find this film to be happy-madness.
The look at drugs and what it does to people is also horrible. The paranoia, the will to give up everything you know and love. Even if Barry isn’t truly abducted, his body, mind, soul, and spirit have been taken over by drugs. Compassion and understanding are needed in the world.
It gets crazier, Barry has a lot to deal with. There is a chainsaw fight, lots of blood if you’re looking for blood. The story for Fried Barry is a good one. Barry is locked up with Ronald, it become One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest extraterrestrial version. Ronald is portrayed by Sean Cameron Michael.
Of course, Sean Cameron Michael is ready for battle, even while locked up in a psychiatry unit. This movie is definitely going to be a movie that you come back and watch again. Ryan Kruger did a great job and the cast just brought all the wild with heart and soul.
Make sure to check out FRIED BARRY.
FRIED BARRY releases on DVD, Blu-Ray, VOD and Digital on Tuesday, October 5.
