Exclusive Interview: Hick Cheramie (Obsidian)

Obsidian

How did you get attached to OBSIDIAN?

A casting call online. It was my first speaking role and I was ready for a challenge. After speaking with the director I became passionate about the character.

Tell us a little bit about your character, Mick?

My character Mick was based on the director’s dear friend in real life, Nick. Mick embodies a very sarcastic and in your face kind of person, but one you can’t help but to love. I was humbled to be able to honor his memory. I was able to relate a lot with the demons that my character fought within and the metaphorical walk we both took, his in the more literal sense and mine with my sobriety.

How was it working with the director, Erica Summers?

Being able to work with Erica was an absolute dream for my first ever speaking role. I feel like I’m truly lucky to be able to have worked with someone so dedicated and passionate about their work. Although challenging at times, I wouldn’t trade it for anything because she taught me so much about what I loved to do and we were all able to have fun while doing it.

What was your favorite scene?

My favorite scene would have to be when I found out I could move my feet to be able to walk again. It didn’t take much for me to embody that character, because going back to the previous question about my character Mick, I really related the scene to how I was able to walk again in life after becoming sober. That scene will always be close to my heart.

What was the most difficult aspect to making this film?

The most difficult aspect, like any production, were the quick script changes and timing. Being my first speaking role, it was harder to adapt at first, but the director made the changes easy, comfortable, and convenient.

What makes this film stand out?

Even though it’s considered horror, I think what makes it stand out the most is that it deals with a lot of internal issues relating to things such as vanity and insecurities we all deal with. It’s kind of like that monster we are all afraid of as kids are just our biggest fears within us.

Do you have any favorite horror films?

The 1978 Halloween would have to be my all time favorite film.

What made you want to get into acting?

I started out always wanting to act as a child and I decided to follow that dream and see what I could push myself to do.

Who inspires your creativity?

I’d have to say my partner and my children inspire me daily. But as far as who inspires me as an artist, it’s a constant change. One day I was working with Bryan Cranston and he inspired me, and at another point recently I was working with Will Smith. It changes all the time. During the time working on Obsidian, Erica and her story inspired me a lot.

What’s next for Hick Cheramie?

I was fortunate enough to become SAG eligible in this last Apple production. So now I feel my opportunities are endless.

West Side Story Doesn’t Have A Perfect Rating, But The Rotten Tomatoes Score Is Still Impressive

With 2021 just weeks away from ending, one of the biggest movies left to arrive this year is Steven Spielberg’s remake of West Side Story. The musical was previously adapted into a movie starring Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer back in 1961 that won 10 Academy Awards and is considered a classic. But going off the early reviews for Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story, it’s doing incredibly well for itself too, as evidenced by its Rotten Tomatoes score.

At the time of this writing, 75 West Side Story reviews have been filed on Rotten Tomatoes, with 71 of those reviews being “fresh” and just four of the reviews being “rotten.” This adds up to a 95% Tomatometer score, so while it’s just a tad shy of joining the lineup of movies with a perfect score on the website, like 12 Angry Men, The Last Picture Show and The Terminator, it’s clearly a hit among most critics. Naturally that score will adjust as more reviews come in, but barring some massive wave of negative reception, West Side Story looks like it’ll go down as one of the best-reviewed movies of 2021.

  • Ranveer and Vijay co-starred in Gully Boy
  • Deepika flew to Hyderabad for her next project
  • “Look who I bumped into at the airport today,” wrote Vijay

New Delhi:

And, the award for the best husband hands down goes to Ranveer Singh. The actor never fails to surprise us with his ‘aww’-dorable comments under wife, actress Deepika Padukone‘s posts. So what happened this time? Deepika has again shared a “husband appreciation post”? No. Please, calm down and allow us to walk you through it. So, Deepika bumped into Vijay Varma at an airport today and they decided to click a selfie. Later, the picture was shared by Vijay Varma on Instagram with a caption, “Look who I bumped into at the airport today. The best. Baba [Ranveer Singh] is missed.” But, Ranveer didn’t miss it. The actor made an appearance in the comment box and wrote, “A beauty and a cutie”. You have nailed it once again, Ranveer. FYI: Ranveer and Vijay Varma were co-stars in Gully Boy.

Deepika Padukone has kick-started her weekend with a “husband appreciation post”. The actress shared a text on Instagram Stories, which read, “Nothing more attractive than a man, who teaches you things without making you feel like you’re dumb for not knowing it already.”

Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone are major couple goals. And, we don’t need proof for this. Now, take a look at this moment when Deepika announced that Ranveer is “best husband in the world…Hands down.” The actress uploaded a BTS video from a shoot and wrote, “I am an actor by profession, but I approach my life like an athlete. It’s just second nature to me.” The caption is nice, right? But it seems like Ranveer doesn’t agree with us here. The actor literally “fixed it” for her. It goes like this, “I am a hottie by profession, but I approach my life like a cutie. It’s just second nature to me.”

Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh will next be seen in sports drama 83.

  • She added the hashtags #throwback #reelsinstagram #reelitfeelit

New Delhi:

Remember those days from childhood when mothers would scold us for spoiling our white school uniforms with dirt? Well, the story isn’t much different when it comes to celebrities. Veteran actress Neena Gupta also seems to have been a strict mother when it came to white clothes. How do we know? Well, you won’t have to guess for long. Neena Gupta‘s daughter and ace designer Masaba Gupta has spilt the beans on social media. Sharing an old ad, Masaba has talked about her mother’s not-so-kind reaction when she came home with dirty white uniforms. The fabric whitener ad features Neena Gupta along with a girl child. In the caption, Masaba wrote, “But mama did not have such a kind reaction to when young Masaba came home from school with a dirty uniform.” The post sent fans down memory lane and many could relate to the situation quite easily.

Masaba Gupta often shares throwback photos and videos on her Instagram timeline. If we dive into her bag of memories, we’ll get an insight into a lot of details about Neena Gupta and her life. In a recent post, Masaba shared her childhood photo. She is seen half-submerged inside a bucket and smiling for the camera. The setting seems to be a bathroom. Her caption read, “Baalti baths or showers?”

On Masaba Gupta’s Instagram page, we also find an old clip of Neena Gupta at an award ceremony. The video shows the actress receiving an award from the late actor Amrish Puri. After receiving the award, Neena Gupta also delivered a power-packed dialogue from her 1987 show Buniyaad. Take a look at the video here:

Sharing yet another adorable childhood photo of herself, Masaba Gupta stole our hearts. In the photo, little Masaba is dressed in a frock and she innocently looks up, facing the camera. What’s more interesting is Masaba’s caption. She wrote, “Missing this life when I didn’t have back pain, didn’t know what intermittent fasting was and it was totally okay to flash your underwear.” Masaba Gupta had also shared another of Neena Gupta’s old ads on her social media page. There, the actress is advertising a pressure cooker brand with animated gestures. Masaba, in her signature funny tone, wrote, “Next time, I come to eat lunch I expect this exact performance.”

On the work front, Neena Gupta will next be seen in Sooraj Barjatya’s Uunchai, alongside Amitabh Bachchan, Anupam Kher and Parineeti Chopra.

  • He died at the age of 72 after suffering from cancer
  • The Royal Shakespeare Company announced the news of his death
  • He received knighthood in 2000

London:

The award-winning theatre and film actor Antony Sher has died aged 72 after suffering from cancer, the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) announced on Friday. South Africa-born Sher was widely considered to be one of Britain’s finest contemporary actors, playing almost all the great Shakespearean roles from King Lear to Shylock. In 1985, he won an Olivier Award for his energetic portrayal of Richard III as a villainous hunchback, propelling himself around the stage on crutches. While at the RSC, Sher – once described by Prince Charles as his favourite actor – met his husband, Gregory Doran, who would become the company’s artistic director.

They were one of the first gay couples to enter a civil partnership in Britain in 2005. In September, Doran stepped back from his role to care for his husband after his condition was diagnosed as terminal.

RSC executive director Catherine Mallyon and acting artistic director Erica Whyman, said they were “deeply saddened” at Sher’s death.

“Our thoughts and sincere condolences are with Greg, and with Antony’s family and their friends at this devastating time,” they added.

Many closets

Sher was born in Cape Town into a migrant Lithuanian Jewish family on June 14, 1949, a year after the National Party came to power and began introducing the apartheid system. “I had an ordinary childhood among white people,” Sher said in 2000.

“My parents weren’t politically aware which meant I grew up in the middle of the atrocity of apartheid without even noticing it. It sounds terrible but it’s the truth.”

But he never really felt at home and came to Britain in 1968 aged 19 after national service in the South African army. “I was a real wimp, very out of place in South Africa, in that whole macho sports society. I felt very uncomfortable with all that. All my tendencies were towards the arts.”

But things did not go to plan at first when he was turned down from the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in central London.

Instead, he got into another drama school and went on to work at Liverpool’s Everyman Theatre with the likes of Jonathan Pryce and Julie Walters.

His time on stage, which in the 1970s and 80s forged a reputation for ground-breaking politically charged performances, was an education in both theatre and life. “For a few years I tried to be straight, had several relationships with women, before I said ‘this is ridiculous’,” he told Monocle online radio.

“I knew I was gay but didn’t want to be. I had to come out as gay and as a white South African and Jewish. I had a lot of closets to come out of.”

Cape Town boy

To moviegoers, Sher was no (1998), starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Joseph Fiennes. The previous year, he was British prime minister Benjamin Disraeli in Mrs Brown, for which Judi Dench – another RSC stalwart — was Oscar-nominated for her portrayal of queen Victoria.

The movies came out after he had kicked a cocaine addiction that put him in hospital in 1996. Sher said he was grateful for his time as a Shakespearean actor, but regretted never playing Hamlet, assessing he was not tall, handsome or blond enough.

He became “Sir Antony” after receiving a knighthood in 2000, and said having his mother in attendance at Buckingham Palace was one of his proudest moments. But he also struggled to come to terms with that, calling himself “a bit of a closet knight”.

“I have come out in many areas of my life, but I have yet to manage this one,” he said later that year.

The honour positioned him firmly inside the British establishment, but he told The Times in 2015: “In my soul, I’m the boy in Cape Town, growing up and feeling uncomfortable in the world”.
